Day trip to Cozumel (from Playa)

Part of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, the island of Cozumel is a short 45 minute ferry ride from the tourist hotspot of Playa Del Carmen. Cozumel is perhaps most famous for its offerings of various water-related activities such as snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, kite-surfing and para-sailing. Scuba Diving and Snorkeling are particularly popular here, because of the presence of healthy coral reefs in the area around Cozumel. Also to be noted is the fact that Cozumel offers some of the cheapest rates for participating in these activities, when compared to other coastal destinations in the world. If you are in Cancun, Playa or anywhere near Cozumel, it is highly recommended that you make a day trip to this fun island.

To get to Cozumel, you have to take a ferry from the ferry terminal in Playa Del Carmen. There are ferries going back and forth everyday between Cozumel and Playa at every hour or every two hours, depending on the time that you take the ferry. There are about 10 – 12 ferries everyday. It is recommended that you buy the tickets to the ferry and for snorkeling/scuba diving at Playa Del Carmen. In addition to most hotels in Playa, various shops near the ferry terminal also sell packages for these activities. If you can speak some Spanish, you may be able to bargain and bring down the price a bit. Prices for ferry ticket are about 156 mexican pesos for each way, while a snorkeling package should not cost more than 40-45 USD. Scuba diving is more expensive, but then you also have to undergo training of around 3-4 hours if you are scuba diving (unless you already have a scuba diving license). Hence, plan and time your trip accordingly.

Once you approach the island of Cozumel, you will start to notice huge cruise ships. A lot of vacationers on cruise ships make a stop to this popular island.

If you are going for a snorkeling trip, then you will be going from Cozumel ferry terminal to the diving area in a small boat as shown below. This boat will have two guides who will help you out with diving, putting on the snorkeling equipment, and even offer you a complimentary drink/soda at the end of your dive. You can also ask these gentlemen to take your picture while you are in the water. There will also be various people at the ferry terminal selling you an underwater photo package, whereby they take your picture while you are diving and are underwater. You may choose to buy one of those packages in case you want to preserve and share your memories back home.

Once you are done with your dive, or if you have some extra time before your dive, then I highly encourage you to explore the island of Cozumel. It has a very vibrant and laid back atmosphere. The town center and Plaza Del Sol are all just east of Av. Rafael Melgar. Walking in the surrounding blocks is also fun.

If you have a few hours and are willing to spend a bit of money, then you should most definitely rent one of these unique mini-cars (they are smaller than the regular cars) to drive around Cozumel. It can be a lot of fun!!
