Alexis Motel, Queenstown

We were scheduled to stay in Queenstown for 3 nights during our South Island trip. We needed an accommodation which was reasonably priced and also within walking distance to the town center. This location aspect was important because we were going to be without our rental car in Queenstown. There are tons of accommodation options in Queenstown, since the town is the #1 tourist hotspot on South Island (and perhaps in all of NZ). Most of them were quite expensive. But there are a few reasonably priced options too. After going through endless reviews and reading forums, we shortlisted 3 options. We started our initial email conversations with these options, in order to gauge both the service levels as well as the people running these establishments. Finally, we decided to book at Alexis Queenstown. The main reason was that Alexis Motel not only satisfied our location/pricing criteria, but it also offered some wonderful views of Lake Wakatipu.

Alexis offers 5 options of studios and apartments during booking. We booked the Spacious Lakeview Studio, which basically had some views, a kitchen, a decent sized bed for two people and a bathroom with bathtub.

There were tables and chairs placed in the hallway outside the Lakeview Studios, where people could sit and relax. This potentially can cause some disturbance, especially if a noisy/loud group is sitting just outside your room, but we never saw any of that during our peaceful stay (even though we saw a couple of reviews about it). The best views were seen from the corner rooms; every room which was along Suburb St and Park St. Those rooms were the Panoramic Lakeview Studios or the Honeymoon Studios, but they came with a higher rate as well.

Alexis is located on Frankton Rd, which is the main road going into the town center. It is a good 15-20 minute walk into Queenstown center, with some roads which are sloping (going down when going into Queenstown and climbing up when coming back from Queesntown). The walk though was quite leisurely, with decent views of the Remarkables mountains and Lake Wakatipu.

There was a car park which is underground (basement), but we never used it. To check-in or for anything else, we had to go to the front office, which was also the “reception” area. The front office is in the same building as the rooms, and a 1 minute walk from the rooms. A lovely lady named Kelly would help us with whatever we needed, whether it was directions to some place, or help with booking activities. We once ran out of milk and were able to buy a can of milk from her too (we got a free can of milk when we checked in). But please note that the front office closes after 8pm, and opens around 8am. So if you need to check out early (like we had to at 6:50 am), or if you are going to come back late and need something late at night, then you should speak to Kelly beforehand. There was good working wi-fi in all areas of our room. The TV had a few channels on it, but we had no time to watch TV. The kitchen was well equipped, with a refrigerator, microwave oven, stove top, tea maker and toaster. You could cook whatever you wanted, as there were some utensils for cooking too.

Overall, we were quite happy with our stay at Alexis. The owners Kelly and Adrienne were friendly and helpful. The lake is very close to the motel, about 2 minutes walk if you go down Suburb St. If you do not mind walking a bit on sloping streets, then I highly recommend Alexis Motel to you.
